The youngest ones who come to us are often the weakest and most fragile, requiring round-the-clock monitoring and care. Thankfully, this care usually results in healthy kittens ready to take on the world.
It was a BIG day of giving yesterday, and it continues today! As of 8 AM, 101 generous donors have raised $30,100 toward our overall goal of $40,000, which will allow us to continue to provide this type of care and allow cats like Teddy and Sadie to flourish.
Bottle Babies
Teddy and Sadie
Born in late January, Teddy and Sadie were an early signal that kitten season would soon be here in earnest. Their mom was one of many cats living in an apartment in Chehalis. A local rescuer offered assistance to get the situation under control. Could we help?
The 4-week-old babies were small and weak, with a heavy load of fleas and dirty ears, but they tested negative for the common intestinal parasites. Close veterinary supervision and experienced foster care was definitely needed.
In the beginning, they were syringe fed KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer), with the gradual addition of soft kitten food. Foster mom Christina faithfully brought them to the shelter every other day for visual exams, weight checks, and evaluations and satisfied their every need around the clock.
Despite receiving regular subcutaneous fluids to help their hydration, injections of vitamin B12 and an oral multi-vitamin supplement, a probiotic and medication to calm their tummies, they struggled. Their appetites were often a cause for concern, as well as their persistent diarrhea. Their diet was slowly adjusted and carefully charted in hopes of positive trends.
All the struggles made sense when, surprisingly, a second test for giardia came back positive. This turned out to be quite a battle for Teddy and Sadie. Not once, but twice the kittens’ lab work was giardia negative, yet the dreaded diarrhea returned.
At last, the third treatment did the trick. They took a positive turn. They became strong and everything about them became the picture of health. Teddy and Sadie have been altered now, and they’ll soon be adopted into a forever home, having been given the careful attention of a loving, knowledgeable, and committed team.
