What an amazing two days we’ve had, thanks to all of our amazing supporters. Although the dust hasn’t quite settled, it looks like 2023 was a great big GiveBIG event, raising almost $35,000 for MEOW.

Our fosters will be assured that they’ll have the support they need as they open their hearts and their homes to those in need of special attention. Thank you so much for your generosity which will keep this lifeline for the felines and canines strong.

The day, and our campaign are winding down, but there is still time to make a difference. As of 10 pm we have raised $34,600 (which includes $6,400 in matching funds) in support of our foster programs and our amazing foster families, which means we will continue to be there for them all, to provide them what they need to be healthy and happy in their forever homes.

We still have about $600 in matching funds available. We’ll be up until midnight!

Meet Luna & Rufus

Little Luna, and her beautiful young mother, Shadow, were taken to a veterinary hospital in Renton. Luna was one of several kittens in the litter, but she and Shadow were ill, so the family relinquished them to the veterinarian and took the healthy kittens home. A kindly staff member contacted MEOW and they were brought into our care. 

Luna was really very ill with a respiratory infection which ultimately resolved with much nursing care in her foster home.  During that time, Shadow lost all interest in motherhood to the point where she was annoyed by Luna, so once she was spayed, she was placed up for adoption, and quickly found her forever home.

But, Luna was lonely!  Enter Rufus, a single kitten about Luna’s age. He had serious digestive issues with no apparent cause and was very emaciated. Would Rufus be the answer to Luna’s loneliness? We had to try.

Meet Phoenix and Alia

Phoenix and Alia were living with a woman and a lot of other cats in a 5th wheel. They arrived at MEOW with severe ear mites and were underweight and very scruffy. Additionally, during intake we noticed that Alia had masses in her mouth.

Due to their medical issues, they weren’t candidates for adoption. In their foster home, they received medication for the ear mites, nutritious food, and lots of love. The ear mites cleared up and their coats became shiny and full.

When antibiotic treatment failed to resolve the masses in her mouth, Alia underwent surgical removal and a biopsy. At last, the biopsy results arrived. Benign. Relief. Thank goodness.

Meet Lord Kensington

Lord Kensington (“Kenny”) is a sweet teenager that, during his time in the shelter, showed no interest in eating and was experiencing anxiety.  He entered foster care with a large variety of foods, in the hopes that a quiet environment and an appetite stimulant would encourage him to eat. 

Kenny did find a favorite food and over time showed an interest in getting pets and love from his foster family.  However, when he began showing signs of single kitten syndrome (swatting and biting at humans), after a quarantine period, it was time for him to be introduced to the resident cats.  They have helped Kenny to realize not everyone wants to be bitten.

MEOW Canine Division is small but mighty, rescuing between 10 and 20 dogs each year, often dogs with special needs, dogs in need of diagnostic or emergency veterinary care, dogs who need some extra time to heal or learn how to be their best selves.

Many of these dogs, if in a shelter, might have to wait a very long time to find their forever home.  Our dog division relies 100% on foster families to provide a soft place to land for the dogs who come into our care.

Meet Teddy – From a MEOW foster mom:

“We assume Teddy had a great start to life though we’ll never know all the details of his past.  He was found by the police, in his house, with another dog, guarding the body of his owner who had passed away.  They took them from their home, from the person they knew and protected, and they ended up at animal control.

Upon arrival the staff was unable to handle them as they were protecting each other. They needed to be separated and evaluated, but the shelter didn’t have the space for that. Additionally, the shelter is a loud and terrifying environment.  Add that to Teddy’s confusion, as well as his age, and his small stature, Teddy needed a helping hand, or he would decline quickly.

Good morning once again! We start the day out with kittens and a match challenge because both have a way of making our day feel better. We are thrilled that, thanks to our amazing supporters, we have raised $15,600 and as a result will be able to make the day better for so many kittens that will come to us this kitten season.

Meet Tansy, Chicory, Woodruff, Poppy, Jade, and Violet

This litter of adorable babies came from a household with too many cats.  It all began with a few unaltered cats and things snowballed fast.  The family was unable to provide adequate nutrition, sanitation, and veterinary care.  There was no end in sight.  Thankfully, the family realized that this litter of kittens deserved a better life, and they were relinquished to one of our independent rescuers and then transferred to MEOW.

As GiveBIG day one winds down, we are thrilled that we have raised $14,800. As we get ready to call it a night, we recognize that animal rescue truly takes a village and that the village really never sleeps. And for that, we are so grateful.

Many of the kittens we rescue are a result of our partnerships with independent rescuers, the amazing people who are working to reduce cat homeless through TNR. In the course of their rescue efforts, they often come across cats and kittens who are not feral and should be in a loving home. That was the case with this precious litter.

Meet Daisy, Tulip, Rose, Lilac, Pansy, and Iris

The new owners of a home in Orting discovered three pregnant kitties when they moved in, left behind by the previous homeowners. They reached out for help. In the meantime, two of the kitties had their babies. The homeowners cared for them until the rescuer was able to find places for them. One mama cat, Petunia, and her 6 kittens came to MEOW. Since the kittens were weaned, Petunia was spayed and quickly adopted.

At 8 weeks old, Daisy, Tulip, Rose, Lilac, Pansy, and Iris still had a bit of growing to do before they were ready for adoption, so into foster they went. Daisy and Tulip are now spayed and available for adoption. The other four are still struggling to gain weight.

As of 8 pm we have raised $13,400 in support of our foster programs and our amazing foster families, which means we will continue to be there for them all, to be ready to lend a hand to those who need us and help ensure they get their happy forever afters.

When someone with an unspayed female cat is faced with kittens, someone who isn’t equipped to care for them as they grow,  someone who wants to ensure the kittens go to appropriate homes, through MEOW’s Toms & Moms program we offer to accept the babies, and sometimes the mom (temporarily). Then when it’s time, spay the mom and return her to her family, while we foster and vet the kittens in preparation for adoption.

Meet Matcha

Matcha was found wandering on an urban farm in Richmond, CA.  Befriended by everyone there, she was being fed and watched by the workers.  When the job ended, a woman moving back to Washington couldn’t leave this sweet cat behind. Matcha was promptly taken to a vet, where she was treated for fleas and a fungal ear infection.  In the process, the vet discovered she was pregnant.

Matcha and her newborns are in a foster home, thanks to our Toms & Moms program. Matcha is a sweet, curious, playful and very friendly kitty.  Her six newborn kittens are adorable, four tabbies and two calicos (maybe). So far, Matcha is a wonderful mama and very attentive to her large brood. But, should she need help, the foster is there for her and the little ones.

Meet Marge, Homer, Bart, Lisa and Maggie

This litter of week-old grey kittens were found in a box on a college campus, with nobody around to care for them. When someone contacted MEOW for help with these babies, they quickly ended up with one of our foster homes. Healthy but hungry, the kittens got the hang of bottle feeding right away, doubling their weight in just a few days.

Without a mom-cat to clean their messes, the kittens needed help bathing several times those first few days. The kittens took to sink baths quickly, relaxing into their foster family’s hands as they were gently cleaned, then snuggling up close to their humans while enjoying a warm hair dryer.

Meet Moby & Poppo

Moby, a Domestic Medium Hair Black and White Tuxedo, came to MEOW by transfer from Yakima.  He had severe stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth) and had to have full mouth extractions, surgically removing all 30 of his teeth. 

Having come from a large feral colony, he was very lonely recovering in a foster home. To cheer him up,  Moby was introduced to his now best friend, Poppo, who also was in foster care. 

Poppo, a DLH black cat transferred to MEOW from Ellensburg, at times exhibited labored breathing when playing.  Diagnostic radiographs, bloodwork and an electrocardiogram, all returned normal findings.

He then saw an Internal Medicine Specialist who treated him for a lower airway infection and bronchitis/asthma. He improved. In time, Poppo has been weaned off his medication and his exercise is slowly being increased. So far he is doing well.
