Peanut and Pecan
Peanut and Pecan were just tiny kittens when they were found struggling alone under a SeaTac trailer last summer. Brought to MEOW, it quickly became apparent they were feeling quite unwell. Lethargic and with persistent fevers and vomiting, they’d been rescued in the nick of time.
But still, even with loving and diligent medical care, they continued to struggle. Blood tests revealed concerning infection and inflammation markers and ultimately, they were diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).
FIP, an intense inflammatory reaction in some cats infected with certain strains of feline coronavirus, has historically been a devastating and almost always fatal diagnosis. In recent years, a drug named GS-441524 has offered a bright spark of hope. This antiviral has shown great success in saving the lives of cats with FIP.
Despite its promise, it continued to be unlicensed for feline use making it challenging and extremely expensive to obtain. But thankfully, as of June last year – while still costly – it’s finally been made available to veterinarians. For Peanut and Pecan the availability of this drug literally saved their lives.
Even with GS-441524, the road to recovery is still uncertain and a long-term commitment. We’re incredibly grateful to Dr Amy Cottrille – a veterinarian kindly volunteering her time with MEOW – for lovingly fostering Peanut and Pecan through their months of medical treatment and healing.
Now, eight months later, they’re at MEOW, looking bright-eyed and (quite literally) bushy-tailed. It’s nearly impossible to clean their suite without them jumping into the trash just for the fun of being scooped out again! While we’re still waiting to get their official clean bill-of-health, it is just around the corner, and they are so ready for the forever home they’ve always deserved.
