Committed to the Cats & People in our Community
Obsidian, Noir, Noriko
A family from Centralia was struggling with 15 cats at home. With nearby shelters bursting at the seams, they turned to MEOW. Our Toms and Moms program is part of MEOW’s commitment to the community: we accept weaned kittens into our adoption program while providing spay / neuter vouchers for the mama and daddy cats. Once altered, the adult cats are returned to their owners, no charge. We then provide loving care and all the veterinary services to prepare the kittens for adoption into forever homes.
Soon after arrival, the five seemingly healthy kittens became gravely ill. Feline Panleukopenia Virus was quickly diagnosed. FPV, a virus particularly dangerous in young or immunocompromised cats, can cause severe symptoms, including low white blood cell count. Although a serious situation, we were prepared. All hands on deck. The kittens immediately received intensive veterinary care, some were hospitalized and others were placed in isolation at the shelter. Our meticulous protocols were strictly followed to keep other cats and kittens safe.
Despite the valiant efforts of the emergency veterinarians, two kittens lost their battle. During this time, Noir was hospitalized for five days (with sepsis and meningitis), and Noriko for two, while Obsidian, the least affected, was lovingly cared for in shelter isolation. We held our breath.
When all three got the all-clear, we were overjoyed! After recuperation under the loving eye of a staff member, they were raring to go and quickly taken home to their forever homes.
In spite of unpredictable challenges, from the first moment, our commitment is always to do our very best for every animal in our care. We are so grateful to the wonderful supporters who stand with us in this mission, allowing kittens like Noir, Obsidian, and Noriko to have happy, healthy futures.
