Draco & Sable’s Story

At MEOW, we have valued relationships with several kind and dedicated independent rescuers who commit their time, energy, and funds to helping cats in need.

Often, this can be a long and delicate process. Rescuers work with families and pets in complex situations, where finding the best way to help everyone can take patience, persistence, and kindness.

When rescuer Sara was asked to help a family struggling with too many cats in an apartment, she was shocked to discover over 100 cats and kittens in dire need. Many of the females were pregnant, nursing kittens, and struggling with parasites and infections. Despite this, the cats were sweet and friendly, but the family was truly overwhelmed and had been unable to access other support.

At the shelter we marveled at their responses to the care and kindness they had so desperately needed. One brave mama cat, Sable, was nursing her kittens while also struggling with a severely injured eye, perhaps due to a run-in with a resident dog. She urgently needed veterinary attention. Another, Draco, with his dashing pirate looks, was also missing an eye and had dental issues.

Sara reached out to MEOW, and we were honored to help. Slowly but surely, Sara worked to ensure each cat would be neutered or spayed and placed with rescues or in foster homes. MEOW went on to offer 30 of these cats a soft place to land, along with the medical and loving care needed to prepare them for brighter futures.

Sable and Draco went on to spend quite some time recuperating in one of MEOW’s experienced and loving foster homes. Both underwent eye surgery, and Draco had much needed dental extractions. Ultimately, we were grateful to ensure all 30 cats were gently cared for, spayed, neutered, treated for parasites, vaccinated and microchipped and when ready, all found loving forever homes.

We’re fortunate to work with our kind rescue partners, who devote themselves tirelessly to this often-overwhelming mission, to give cats like Draco and Sable the happy lives they so deserve.

Mr. David Bowie

Hello!

It’s been just over a year since we adopted Mr. David Bowie from MEOW. While we kept his name (we’re big fans!) he has acquired a number of nicknames around the house (Bowseph, Bowie Bear, Mr. Bear, Bowst, Toast, etc).

There were so many happy tears when we adopted this little gentleman, and while he was expectedly a little slow to warm up, he is a treasured presence in our home. Now he walks around like he owns the place (until he hears an unexpected sound and zooms under the chair).

Bowie loves to watch TV with us and was riveted by last season’s Love is Blind. He’s currently working his way through Gilmore Girls. He gets all the attention and brushings and tummy rubs he can handle. He is spoiled with a constant stream of new toys from his grandpa.

He gets to chase our other cat, Chalupa around and she chases him too (when she’s not being jealous of him). We love our Bowie boy and are grateful we are able to be his forever home. It feels like he’s always been here.

Galileo and Kepler

Renamed, of course 😊 – I adopted Galileo and Kepler in November of 2023 (their shelter names were Elvis and Priscilla), and they are thriving and living their best cat lives!

They were both fraidy cats, of course, and it took them a good 8 months or so to really get comfortable and learn to trust. Kepler, perhaps even a little longer. But now they have the run of the house (inside only, of course), and are the most playful and well-behaved cats ever.

They share everything, from toys to beds to cat trees and even their food. I swear, a can of wet food tends to go half-and-half, and if only one of them eats at a time, they always eat about half and leave half for the other. It’s surreal!

With the occasional exception, they both like to sleep on my feet or between my ankles on top of the bed (they’re not so much into exploring under the comforter), and they’ll tend to nap in whatever room I happen to be in. During the day, for the most part, they love to sit on the front window sill and judge the neighborhood.

Adopting them was one of the best ideas ever.

Ruth Bader Ginspurr

Hi!

I was there a few weekends ago and left with Dinah, who we have renamed to Ruth Bader Ginspurr.

She is thriving. She loves posing for photos and climbing on all the structures we’ve installed for her. She is so playful and talkative and sassy. It’s been so much fun getting to know her big personality. She already runs our house.

I just wanted to send a message thanking you again for all that you do. We couldn’t be happier to have found this little old lady.

Hi, it’s Cate! Just wanted to send an update on Eliza (who was Gigi at the Meow rescue)!

She is so much fun, so loves to talk to me and play with wand toys. She loves climbing around the cat tree, and is really enjoying the birds coming out as we move into spring. She loves having her tummy pet, and has started cuddling in bed with me too.

She is just a perfect lady, and I’m so happy you all helped connect us to her!

For a $20 donation you will receive a printed photo on site and access to online digital images. Safety first, so pets must be restrained, either on a leash or in a carrier.

You can be a Santa too, by bringing your pet food donations for MEOW’s Little Pet Pantry, which asks visitors to “Give what you can ~ Take what you need”.

MEOW’s Holiday Craft Bazaar & Bake Sale

THANK YOU to all of our crafters, bakers, volunteers, and shoppers.
We raised over $10,000 for the animals.

Our annual Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale will once again be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 105 State St. S. in Kirkland, just up the road from the shelter.

As always, we’ll have beautiful, handcrafted items and delicious baked goods for sale, generously donated by our volunteers and supporters. There will also be fun raffle drawings. Pet beds and toys, decor, knitted wear, quilts, jewelry, and seasonal items are just a few of the wonderful things we’ll have available.

Bring a pet food or human food item to donate and support MEOW’s and St John’s Little Pantries.

MEOW’s Holiday Bazaar is a wonderful opportunity to find one-of-a-kind gifts, support MEOW, and catch up with other MEOW folk. We hope you will stop and shop.

Razzy

Razzy

Razzy’s Story

There was sadness in the eyes of the soft-spoken young man as he placed the carrier on the counter. Close to his side, his 3-year-old daughter, in a ruffled dress and lace-trimmed stockings, watched quietly. The man explained that they had lost their home and would be temporarily living in the family car. Knowing their 9-year-old cat would not do well with this, they had agreed to surrender Razzy to allow him a safer future.

During Razzy’s intake, the man smiled as he talked about his big personality, his likes and dislikes. Someone asked dad if we could let his little girl pick out some cookies and treats from our snack table. Her eyes lit up. While she placed sweet treats in a small brown bag, the staff and volunteers secretly passed an envelope, collecting their own gift cards and cash, a treat for dad to discover later, to help on this new journey.

Razzy went into foster care, to wait to be chosen.  Although FIV positive, overall, he’s a big, healthy character, talkative and curious. He likes windows and enjoys canned food. He will sit on a lap or allow being held on his terms and will express his opinion about that when he’s over it.

After his foster mom got to know him, she knew he was there to stay, the King of his new Castle. 

Razzy’s story reminds us how a little bit of kindness can have a huge impact.

Cats like Razzy, who come to us with a tale to tell, inspire us every day to remain committed to our motto, “all nine lives are precious.”
