Maxwell Smart

Maxwell Smart

Providing support is to give help or assistance, or to hold someone up.

The third time Max faced major surgery due to ingesting a foreign object, his human mom realized she could no longer manage his Pica, a challenging condition in which an animal (or human) will ingest non-food items.

In Max’s case, he is particularly drawn to rubbery items, such as rubber bands, rubber balls, and once, a rubber wine stopper.  Max was returned to MEOW and received the critical surgery he needed.

In our medical diagnostics of Max, which included consulting with a behaviorist, we discovered that Max is most prone to eating non-food items when bored or anxious.

During the months when Max lived at MEOW, we made certain he had lots of daily stimulation from staff and volunteers. We were vigilant about keeping rubbery toys and other dangerous items away from him, only allowing hard, durable toys, as well as lasers and wand toys managed by his caretakers.

We knew Max wasn’t the perfect cat for just anyone and would do best in a home with cat savvy adopters who would not only have lots of time to offer him plenty of attention and enrichment, but also make sure his environment was safe.

Then one day, our wishes for Max came true! Someone came to meet Max in hopes of adopting him as a best friend for her cat – who happens to also have Pica! The perfect home for Maxwell Smart!!

Kingdom

Kingdom

Kindness is marked by acts of generosity, consideration, rendering assistance, or concern for others, without expecting praise or reward in return.

Last winter a couple of rescuers were alerted to a colony of nine cats living near an adult family home in Marysville. Yes, they could trap and get them altered, but appointments were scarce and the shelters were full.

When the rescuers arrived to assess the situation, a thin red tabby came running to let them know he was very friendly – and so hungry. They put down food and began talking with the neighbors to get more information.

One woman said she was planning to trap also – to euthanize them. She got amusement from watching the cats struggle in the cold and snow. If the cats were lucky, they’d get a few leftovers from the dinners of the residents. Often they’d eat the compost or something from the garbage. The heartless women had bullied an older gentleman until he stopped feeding the cats for fear of getting in trouble. The cats were starving.

The rescuers began feeding them every day while waiting for spay/neuter appointments and started assessing their level of friendliness.

Kingdom would meet the car each day, teaching the others by example.

Six of the nine cats became MEOW cats, thanks to our heroes, the rescuers – and to that trusting red tabby, Kingdom.

What an amazing two days we’ve had, thanks to all of our amazing supporters. Although the dust hasn’t quite settled, it looks like 2023 was a great big GiveBIG event, raising almost $35,000 for MEOW.

Our fosters will be assured that they’ll have the support they need as they open their hearts and their homes to those in need of special attention. Thank you so much for your generosity which will keep this lifeline for the felines and canines strong.

Stevie Wonderpurr is resting easy knowing that he is safe and loved in his foster home and MEOW will always be there for him.

The day, and our campaign are winding down, but there is still time to make a difference. As of 10 pm we have raised $34,600 (which includes $6,400 in matching funds) in support of our foster programs and our amazing foster families, which means we will continue to be there for them all, to provide them what they need to be healthy and happy in their forever homes.

We still have about $600 in matching funds available. We’ll be up until midnight!

Meet Luna & Rufus

Luna

Little Luna, and her beautiful young mother, Shadow, were taken to a veterinary hospital in Renton. Luna was one of several kittens in the litter, but she and Shadow were ill, so the family relinquished them to the veterinarian and took the healthy kittens home. A kindly staff member contacted MEOW and they were brought into our care.

Luna was really very ill with a respiratory infection which ultimately resolved with much nursing care in her foster home.  During that time, Shadow lost all interest in motherhood to the point where she was annoyed by Luna, so once she was spayed, she was placed up for adoption, and quickly found her forever home.

But, Luna was lonely!  Enter Rufus, a single kitten about Luna’s age. He had serious digestive issues with no apparent cause and was very emaciated. Would Rufus be the answer to Luna’s loneliness? We had to try.

zzz-giveBIG 2023 Update – May 3, 7pm

As of 7 pm we have raised $30,600 in support of our foster programs and our amazing foster families, which means we will continue to be there for them all, to give them a soft place to land, and provide them with any necessary medical care, for as long as they need, and when they’re ready, help them find their forever home.

There are still match dollars on the table! We have permission to match up to $200 of your gift, which means more for the animals!

Meet Phoenix and Alia

Alia

Phoenix and Alia were living with a woman and a lot of other cats in a 5th wheel. They arrived at MEOW with severe ear mites and were underweight and very scruffy. Additionally, during intake we noticed that Alia had masses in her mouth.

Due to their medical issues, they weren’t candidates for adoption. In their foster home, they received medication for the ear mites, nutritious food, and lots of love. The ear mites cleared up and their coats became shiny and full.

When antibiotic treatment failed to resolve the masses in her mouth, Alia underwent surgical removal and a biopsy. At last, the biopsy results arrived. Benign. Relief. Thank goodness.

zzz-giveBIG 2023 Update – May 3, 3pm

As of 3 pm we have raised $25,000 towards our lofty goal of $47,000 in support of our foster programs and our amazing foster families, which means we will continue to be there for them all, to give them a soft place to land for as long as they need. We still have of our 12 pm match dollars left.

Meet Lord Kensington

Lord Kensington (“Kenny”) is a sweet teenager that, during his time in the shelter, showed no interest in eating and was experiencing anxiety.  He entered foster care with a large variety of foods, in the hopes that a quiet environment and an appetite stimulant would encourage him to eat.

Kenny did find a favorite food and over time showed an interest in getting pets and love from his foster family.  However, when he began showing signs of single kitten syndrome (swatting and biting at humans), after a quarantine period, it was time for him to be introduced to the resident cats.  They have helped Kenny to realize not everyone wants to be bitten.

zzz-giveBIG 2023 Update – May 3, 12pm

As of 12pm we have raised $21,000 in support of our foster programs and our amazing foster families, which means we will continue to be there for them all, the dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, however they need us.

And we have a new $2,000 match challenge. Until it’s gone, up to $100 of your gift will be matched, increasing your positive impact on the animals!

MEOW Canine Division is small but mighty, rescuing between 10 and 20 dogs each year, often dogs with special needs, dogs in need of diagnostic or emergency veterinary care, dogs who need some extra time to heal or learn how to be their best selves.

Many of these dogs, if in a shelter, might have to wait a very long time to find their forever home.  Our dog division relies 100% on foster families to provide a soft place to land for the dogs who come into our care.

Meet Teddy – From a MEOW foster mom:

“We assume Teddy had a great start to life though we’ll never know all the details of his past.  He was found by the police, in his house, with another dog, guarding the body of his owner who had passed away.  They took them from their home, from the person they knew and protected, and they ended up at animal control.

Upon arrival the staff was unable to handle them as they were protecting each other. They needed to be separated and evaluated, but the shelter didn’t have the space for that. Additionally, the shelter is a loud and terrifying environment.  Add that to Teddy’s confusion, as well as his age, and his small stature, Teddy needed a helping hand, or he would decline quickly.

zzz-giveBIG 2023 Update – May 3, 8am

Good morning once again! We start the day out with kittens and a match challenge because both have a way of making our day feel better. We are thrilled that, thanks to our amazing supporters, we have raised $15,600 and as a result will be able to make the day better for so many kittens that will come to us this kitten season.

Throughout the day we will be launching several match challenges. There’s one going on right now. Until the $2,000 match is gone, up to $100 of your donation will be matched, increasing your impact for the animals like these cuties.

Meet Tansy, Chicory, Woodruff, Poppy, Jade, and Violet

This litter of adorable babies came from a household with too many cats.  It all began with a few unaltered cats and things snowballed fast.  The family was unable to provide adequate nutrition, sanitation, and veterinary care.  There was no end in sight.  Thankfully, the family realized that this litter of kittens deserved a better life, and they were relinquished to one of our independent rescuers and then transferred to MEOW.
